Omg i have no idea what i would buy with a $45k budget... There are literally so many options

Some guy's parents in my school had US$60k to spend on a new car - I flatly told them no and to buy a second hand Lexus LS430.
And I think they're actually going to buy it...

people like that are why we get to buy these cars, used, for cheap years later.

First option I'd take is to import an R32 GT-R. But, yeah, way too many options.
Oh that, or a Corvette ZO6!

Fuck them, that is all.

buick roadmaster Wagon, and do a diesel and manual swap, and paint it brown, and put some miata door handles or something on it.

Good thinking, Mattbob! You have a solid point.

Maybe he had to buy new? My parents hate used cars. . . I am not sure why.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 13:34 |

I would buy a few cars. I guess I am cheap and stuck in the '80s and '90s.

Depressing part? Nope!

1996, highschool, I had a VERY used '88 subaru, partly red, partly rust.
I lived in very affluent mountain town. one student whose oversized Hummer (the very tasty H1) was getting keyed daily, simply gave it to his sister and got a porsche. I had a hatred

Nope, he was looking at a used 335

on my street a 18yr old girl got a TT RS for her highschool grad gift, her brother got a s4 cab - which he promptly wrapped around a light pole and was replaced by a H2....i hate my neighbors.

If they bought used the parking lot would be full of clapped out E36s.

now I am really confused... Why didn't he buy used. Maybe piece of mind?

Bridgestone RE11-A!
![]() 09/22/2014 at 14:52 |
|
What's the difference between the RE11s and the RE11 As?!
![]() 09/22/2014 at 14:53 |

Sigh...I'm a decade out of college, and I can barely afford a quarter of that for a car!
$45k would literally buy ALL the cars I would love to have right now.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 14:54 |

The A's are the updated version of the RE11. They are almost the same but the A's are better. I think it was a slight change to the tread pattern and compound, making them stickier but also better in the rain

Hmmm okay it's down to either those or Dunlop ZIIs for me...
![]() 09/22/2014 at 14:58 |

How long do you want the tires to last?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 15:01 |
|
Your next comment is going to be you telling me how much better the RE11s are, right?
![]() 09/22/2014 at 15:06 |
|
well it depends, RE11As last longer(about 15 to 20k on lighter cars) but they aren't as grippy as the Dunlops, which probably are grippiest tire with a 200 tread wear rating...they are almost semi slicks, but they last 5 to 7k. Something to consider!
![]() 09/22/2014 at 15:14 |
|
Hmmm this is going to be more difficult to decide than I thought...
Dailying semi-slicks sounds hilarious any way you look at it....and I do want to beat the fucking Foci (if they're not moved out of GS, which they fucking should be). And, as you know, the minimum tread wear rating for next year SCCA solo is 200 if you want to stay in street class.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 15:18 |

They probably deal with hydroplaning well, but it shouldn't be to hard just be prepared to change them out yearly!! they wear quickly and also you might heat cycle them too, something to watch out for! I doubt that though... Although it might happen. I honestly don't know.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 15:21 |

I could always try the Dunlops after this winter, and when I need to replace them, try the RE11s, and see how the results are.
Also, did you see that picture of the blue Mustang wheel on my FP'd article? He put Pilot Sport Cup 2s on it(!)

I occasionally take my sister's 2012 Cooper S to school. It stands out like crazy in a sea of Cavaliers, 90's Jeeps, and lifted pickups. Everyone else feels like a plebeian when I park it.

My parents won't buy a used car because they "aren't reliable" and don't come with "bumper to bumper factory warranties".
![]() 09/22/2014 at 20:24 |
|
Psh, FP? I never go on there. I would have thought about getting those if they were expensive and came in smaller wheel sizes. No love for 18 and down.
Just be warned the Dunlops will outperform the RE-11As just about everywhere besides the wet.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 20:26 |
|
But what about Rivals bro?! That's what the President of the Chapter put on his Focus.
I've been told the Dunlops like to hydroplane if you go fast enough.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 20:34 |
|
They aren't bad. The way I think of it, the RE-11As are the most DD friendly of the Extreme performance tires, and Dunlops are the most performance oriented. Everything else is in between. I think Kuhmo has one as well which put the highest skid-pad numbers, but the feel was inconsistent. Yokohama has really good feel but not the highest grip levels. Bridgestone is probably between the Dunlops and the Yokohamas.
I have done TOO much research.
![]() 09/22/2014 at 20:39 |
|
No, you've done the correct amount of research, far more than I would've done. You've been very helpful. The Dunlops would be the correct fit for me because I don't put TOO much miles on my car, and I autoX every weekend.

When I was still in high school a kid got new 2011 charger rt for his 16th birthday and a new nissan GTR for his 17th birthday. Always pissed me off.
